The history and culture of Avadh has always fascinated me. Ever since my childhood, I have felt a strong Innate desire to understand the mystery behind the charm of Avadh's culture, which has been captivating the hearts of millions of people since time immemorial. The 'Tehzib' of Lucknow has no parallel in any part of the world. During the long coune of history, it has acquired curious shades of philosophy of the Aryant, vanity of the Sheikhs, majestic lifestyles of the nawabs together with their love for human dignity and social justice, folks culture of Avadh, bravado of its soldier and the sublime grace of the nobility.
The ever-increasing enchantment of this 'Tehzib' has been the driving force behind my elocutions and penmanship. This urge has resulted in publication of over a dozen books on 'Avadh Culture', amongst which 'Lucknow Nama' was widely acclaimed and comidered worthy of a National Award by the Government of India. In this particular book, I made an attempt to present the fascinating political, social and religious environment of Avadh of medieval period, through picturesque narrations of history and architecture of selected monuments. It took a decade of penevering search in hundreds of published and unpublished documents, private letters and government and private archives. Numerous bits of Information were collected through interviews with many senior citizens-descendants of past nobility now living in oblivion.
Lucknow Monuments' presents the glorious cultural heritage of Avadh through historical accounts and contemporary social and political events related to 115 selected memorials. The history of these monuments covering a span of thousands of years B. C. to the culmination of British Rule, is in fact the history of the ribe and fall of the Nawabi rule in Avadh. It also covers the advancements of fine arts and rise of architectural excellence in Lucknow, which remained a seat of power in Avadh throughout history. Events leading to building of these monuments are no less fascinating than fairy tales. An attempt has been mode here to present lucid descriptions of beauty and craftsmanship of the monuments together with the contemporary socio-political scenario.
I am confident that Lucknow Monuments' will serve the objective of acquainting many amongst the classes and the masses with the glorious cultural heritage of Avadh.
I bless Shivangi, Shubhangi, Anurag, Amit, Naman and Aryan for their contributions in this glorious project.
