Preface

The book represents an attempt to appreciate the art and architecture of the places of worship and other monuments still extant in OLD GOA against the back- ground of its ancient glory.

In order to help the reader to be familiar with their origin and other circums- tances relating to them, where need be the historical setting has been presented. It is hoped that the discerning reader will be rewarded in going through the pages by the satisfaction he will derive in his search to identify the various trends, motifes and influences which have had their impact on the architecture of the monuments in Old Goa.

As the monuments have a bearing on the discoveries and conquests of Portugal of sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, an attempt has been made to aid the reader with some references to the background of the time.

However, with due regard to the fact that there may be many studious readers, who though eager to behold the aesthetic panorama of architectural art but are yet unable to undertake a journey for the purpose to the Old City, the book has been profusely illustrated to familiarise the reader with the 'Golden Goa' of the past and the Old Goa of today.
