Having served as a subordinate officer and Senior Research Officer at Tribal Research Institute since its inception in 1974, I travelled every nook and corner of Mizoram. I, therefore, came across a number of places and big stones or rocks which appeared to have historical, archaeological or monumental importance. Some of them were then studied and were found valuable for further research. And for the first time, the research data so collected on the twenty three places, stones or caves in the name of MONOLITHS AND LANDMARKS OF MIZORAM was published in 1979.
Now, I am very glad to see another book of that kind is coming up. I offer my sincere thanks to the officers and staffs of Tribal Research Institute for the work in this line is being continued and accomplished.
A book entitled 'Monoliths and Landmarks of Mizoram' containing twenty three number of monoliths and landmarks was first published in the year 1979 by the Tribal Research Institute. Over the years, while performing tour for research work and various Departmental Programme, the Institute came across and found some more of these in different places. The Institute then had included the work as one of its annual Research Projects in the year 1990-1991 Fortunately, with the growing awareness among the public and voluntary Organisations of the importance of monoliths and historical places, a number of reports or requests from different quarters have been received by the Institute and the Department. Under the guidance and direction of the Department Head, the Institute has done spot verification of all those places and now 30 number of monoliths and landmarks are brought out in this Book entitled 'Monoliths and Landmarks of Mizoram Vol-II'. I hope this book will tell and keep record of the past socio-cultural, traditional and historical aspects of the Mizo which has been one of the genuine purview of Tribal Research Institute.
Publication of this book is possible only because of the efficient and enthusiastic service of my Researching staff Mr. V. L. Fimate, Translator, who took up the Project from the beginning till collection of almost half of the material. So, I feel he deserves a special mention here. As the work required extensive tour, the service of other Researching staff as a team-work had to be utilised. In this case, Miss Lalfakzuali and Mr. C. Lalruatfela both Research Investigators have done collection of more than half of the materials. So a big thanks is conveyed to them for their invaluable and sincere services for this project in addition to their respective allotted work of Research Projects.
