About The Book

India's northeastern states bore the brunt of the horribly miscalculated 1962 war with China, which resulted in many problems. While losing territory to China was one of them, the deep- rooted emotional scars and alienation of the northeastern states due to repeated neglect by successive central governments was tougher to heal. After Prime Minister (PM) Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had made an earnest attempt to bridge the divide between the Northeast and the rest of India during his tenure, PM Narendra Modi was the first to take the task of uplifting the Northeast with a rare visionary zeal with his Act East Policy. Ten years later, the results are all too visible.

Seamless road connectivity, umpteen new airports and vast swathes of new railway tracks across hitherto unconnected areas have changed the way one travels across the Northeast. The massive dip in insurgency and resolution of inter-state conflicts have created an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, resulting in unprecedented tourist footfall and an upswing in the local economy. This transformation ought to be witnessed personally to understand what political willpower can achieve.

Modi's Northeast Story is a one-of-its-kind anthology that documents the transformation of India's northeastern states since 2014. It brings together contributors who have been at the forefront of ushering in this change or have witnessed it unfolding from very close quarters, including Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma; Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu; Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju; Union Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways and Civil Aviation General V.K. Singh (Retd); Members of Parliament S. Phangnon Konyak and Tejasvi Surya; author and anthropologist Rami Desai; among others.

Foreword

It is with great pleasure that I extend my heartfelt appreciation for the remarkable work encapsulated within the pages of this book, Modi's Northeast Story. An eclectic anthology, conceived, curated and edited by Shri Tuhin A. Sinha and Shri Aditya Pittie, it meticulously captures the transformative journey of the Northeastern states of India under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi. This comprehensive work stands as a testament to the visionary leadership and unwavering commitment of our PM towards bringing about positive changes in one of the most geographically diverse and culturally rich parts of our nation.

The development initiatives executed in the Northeast under the visionary leadership of PM Modi stand as a testament to the power of dedication, foresight and a relentless pursuit of progress.

The Northeast has always been blessed with unparalleled natural beauty and cultural diversity. However, for far too long, the immense potential of this region remained untapped due to infrastructural constraints, connectivity challenges and socio-economic disparities. Recognizing the significance of harnessing this potential, PM Modi embarked on a journey to usher in a new era of growth and prosperity for the people of Northeast India.
