About the Book The present volume is the proceedings of the National Seminar organised by the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit on, 'Models of Understanding Consciousness' during 11-13 Oct 2012. In this a Reader will find many interesting papers by great thinkers of India in modern times.

There are total 18 papers dealing with the concept from Ritual, Philosophical, and Scientific points of view. If readers find the volume useful in any way the efforts of bringing it out would be fruitful.

About the Author Prof. Ujjwala Jha is, at present, Director, Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit, University of Pune, Pune 411007, maharashtra. Her fields of interest are: Indian Hermeneutics; Indian Logic; Indian Philosophy of Language; Veda; Dharmasastra; Textual Criticism; Indian Logic and Epistemology etc. She has been actively engaged in research in these areas. Eight books and around seventy Research Papers are to her credit.

Preface It gives me great pleasure to present this volume on consciousness to readers. It is entitled, 'Models of Understanding Consciousness'. The complex concept of consciousness has been an eternal point of concern for many a thinker worldwide. There are different issues regarding consciousness which need to be attended. For resolving the point, 'what is consciousness' different models of understanding the same were evolved from the times of the Vedas. 'what is consciousness', 'what is its nature, what is its locus,' 'How does it function' etc. are some of the questions. In different knowledge domains like Philosophy, Psychology, Medicine, Neurology etc. Consciousness has been the central point of enquiry. There also are different approaches like Philosophical, Psychological, Spiritual, Scientific from which thinkers have been dealing with the complex issue.
