Thousands of plants with their coherent uses are described in all ayurvedic compendiums. Global acceptance of medicinal plants as a natural source of medicines to treat many diseases. Indian system of medicine is a authentic wealth of a number of valuable drugs belonging to vegetables, animals and mineral kingdoms. Acharya’s expounded and recognized various rational fundamental concepts regarding the knowledge of life process, health, diseases and their treatment. Single plants as well as compound preparations of dugs comprises of plants, animals and mineral kingdoms are used widely for treatment of many diseases. Majority of the Crude Drugs are obtained from the plant sources while the minority of the drugs are derived from animals and mineral sources. The plant origin drugs are • frequently used as whole plant or their parts such as root, stem, leaf, flower, seed, fruit modifications of stem and root, bark of a stem or root, wood, and their exudates or gums etc. constitute single drugs and these are used extensively to treat various diseases. Plant sources are mainly from trees, herbs, shrubs and climbers.
Shigru is a wonderful medicinal plant used extensively for the treatment of various diseases. Details of phytochemical constitutes, modern pharmacological and clinical evolution done on different parts and dosages forms are described in de-tail in this book. Shigru used to treat indigestion, rheumatic problems, headache, internal tumours, abscess, oedema, reduces lipid, spleen disorders, hiccough, cough, dyspnoea, pain in sides, worms, piles, hair tonic, renal stones, eye problems, malnutrition etc.
In the Department of Sangyaharan a research work was conducted on Shigruguggulu in Sangyaharan as vedanahar (pain relieving) under my supervision. Dr. B.N.Maurya pursued Ph.D. thesis and completed the work in May 2008. Shigru-Moringa oleifera is principle component of Shigru Guggulu. Shigru-Moringa Oliefera was used for health benefits as well as to cure diseases as Ahara (food) and Aushadha (medicine) both. In Ayurveda this plant is described as Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), Vedanahar (analgesic), Rasayana (antioxidant and rejuvenator) Vranaropan (wound healing), Granthi nasaka ( anti-turner), Vidradhi nasaka (to cure abscess), Shoola nasaka (Analgesic) and Twak roghar ( various skin problems) . Various parts of this plant such as the leaves, roots, seeds, bark, fruit, flowers and immature pods act as cardiac and circulatory stimulants, possess antitumor, antipyretic, antiepileptic, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, antispasmodic, diuretic, antihypertensive, cholesterol lowering, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, hepatoprotective, antibacterial and antifungal activities, and are being employed for the treatment of different ailments in the indigenous system of medicine, particularly in Ayurveda. This booklet focuses on the detailed Ayurvedic Nutritional, chemical composition, medicinal uses, along with pharmacological properties and cultivation practices of multipurpose tree Shigru (Moringa).
Ayurveda has been in existence right from the dawn of human creation. It is a store house of knowledge of both the art and science of life by which one can attain real positive health. Shigru, botanically identified as M. Oliefera Lam. is a tree growing all over the tropical places of world. The first part of this book dealt with the Vedic and classical Ayurvedic aspect of Moringa olifera (Shigru). Which reflects that all the parts of this plant are in use since time immemorial. The next section is about the botanical identity, Phytochemistry and distribution of Moringa. Further a light is thrown on nutritional values and cultivation practices. The last section is for those who may be interested in further studies. This section provides additional background information on the Moringa tree, the scientific studies that have already been conducted and the types of studies that need to be conducted. This booklet present merely a representative sampling of current knowledge on Moringa. However, an effort has been made to provide enough information to get you started. We hope this booklet will give yoti a meaningful introduction to Moringa and their immense potential to impact human life. Today billions of people on our planet suffer from malnutrition and health problems. Their pain and suffering cannot even be imagined. To address this we will need every tool possible at our command, and perhaps Moringa can play a role. If you can assist in initiating further studies, this booklet gives you a starting point. Some examples of the studies needed have been provided, but it is today's need for further insightful studies, ultimately they will add to the collective knowledge that can serve our world. Every action, even the smallest one, will help to complete the picture.
