About The Book

A significant feature of this volume is the study of the cult and iconography of Minor Hindu Deities in Andhra Pradesh which played no less important role in the life and beliefs of the common people. This volume contains 20 latest research papers by Scholars of repute on minor Hindu Deities like Surya, Hanuman, Garuda, Vishwaksena, Sudarsanamurti, Revanta, Virabhadra, Ganesa, Chandesa, Mahisasuramardini, Karttikeya and folk deities.

The papers included in the volume bring to light for the first time new literary, epigraphic, numismatic, sculptural and iconographical data relating to minor deities which are not studied critically so far. This volume is bound to be useful not only to the serious art historians engaged in the study of Minor Hindu Deities but also the readers on Indian Hindu Duties.

Introduction

The temples- great and small contain a variety of images of gods and goddesses in various postures. Though most of us go to temples, very few take the interest to observe these images in close quarters and to understand the significance of their existence in several places. If only a proper understanding of nature of these images is made, it would enable us to appreciate more, the otherwise verbal admiration of the handiwork of our ancient artist and also enable us to venerate and understand them better. A study of the images is termed iconography and this forms a part of the science of aesthetics and is one of the most absorbing branches of Fine Art.
