Book Description
About The Book

Military Sociology as a discipline, acquired in the United States in the immediate wake of the Second World War. As patterns tend to repeat cyclically, a good historical perspective is necessary to interpret the present setting and the context of Indian Military Sociology. India’s professional army is a mini society itself. The further it keeps off from civilian society, the better its professional ethos. This book emphasised on the compilation of documents from various scholars and authors at universities around the macrocosm as well as military officers devoted to the sector of study. The book covered the historical excursus of studies prior to historical approaches, contemporary research, interpretive studies and theoretical approaches developed specifically for this topics, including issues surrounding the armed forces, military culture, professionalism, conditions, services, problems of soldiers and military humanitarian in the armed forces, an examination of the structural change within the military over the years. The book is the compilation of the societal construction of military facts and knowledge. The book is ideal for scholars of the field as well as those coming to the sociology of the military for the first time. As in India, Military sociology has been yet to achieve its stand in the academic institution, to be taught in a wider prospect for the general population to recognise the importance of the military existence. The production of this compilation is motivated by both a certain disappointment with the present state of military sociology and the panorama of new opportunities for the field.

Preface

While working on the compilation, I frequently felt like rewriting the whole book as my own theoretical framework on military sociology and the transformation of the discipline in the higher level, but then, there was less evidence of the sources and data to be collected with regard to the study of military sociology in India.

This monograph aims to review the literature on military sociology in India as possible. The purpose of reviewing the literature is to gauge broad trends - coverage of the facts in terms of how the subject can help us to understand military as a social institution. Such a review may also be useful to scholars and students for planning their studies and faculties to refer to the availabilities of sources across the globe. Historical studies enrich our understanding of the present. Hence, a study on "military sociology cannot be confined by the boundaried of separate academic disciplines.

The book emphasised on the study of military organisation, military families, military technology, the military profession, the military services, military education and military humanitarian. The book is the compilation of the social construction of military facts and knowledge. It enables to define briefly on the military-cultural relations, military public communication and the management in professional armies. As in India, Military sociology is yet to achieved its stand in the academic institution, to be taught in a wider prospect for the general population to know the importance of the military existence. The production of this compilation is motivated by both a certain disappointment with the present state of military sociology and the prospect of new opportunities for the field. It may be the first modern account of a credible figure not only elevating the term military-friendly, but also providing thoughts around its definition.
