Second only to the great Sankaracarya in stature among the worthy Sanskritists produced by Kerala, Melputtur Narayana Bhatta combined in himself a gifted poet and an astute scholar His Narayaniya, composed in praise of Lord Krsna in about one thousand verses is probably the finest devotional poem in Sanskrit. Melputtur’s contribution to Campu literature, Sastra kavyas, grammar. Mimamsa and Vedic studies is also substantial. The present monograph portrays the colourful personality of this great poet-scholar vividly and brings to the fore his many-faceted achievements in a lucid style.
Professor C. Rajendran, Professor of Sanskrit, University of Calicut is a scholar of international repute. His main works include Vyaktiviveka—A Critical Study, Studies in Comparative Poetics, Living Traditions of Natyasastra (Ed) and The Traditional Sanskrit Theatre of Kerala. He is the recipient of Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for literary criticism and Ramakrishna Sanskrit Award instituted by Canadian World Educational Foundation for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching and Research. He has served as Visiting Professor at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris (2005).
