This book is the saga of a man, who was born in a lower middle class family of a remote Indian village but became a legendary personality in his life time through his extraordinary achievements in the field of science and unparallel patriotism in promoting social consequences of science for his motherland. This book does not pretend to be a definitive biography of this great personality whose scientific pursuits ranged from Astrophysics to Atomic Nucleus and whose outlook and action as an organiser and planner laid the foundation of Modern India. This book is a modest attempt to give an account of the man, highlighting his scientific concepts which were so much a part of him. Science was so central to his being that his activities on promoting social awareness of science were always influenced by his scientific outlook. This book narrates his life story in such a way that the reader can understand the essence of the man, his science, his character as a rebel and his time covering the last period of the British rule and first few years of our Independence, during which he made extraor dinary contributions to science and to the development of the country. The book is intended for general reader and hence narration of his science is presented here in a simplified manner by excluding mathematical explanations and jargons but not over-simplified to appear trivial.
