Οne of the places synonymous with pilgrimage and the Hindu faith, alongside Kedarnath and Kashi, is the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji. Every year, millions of devotees make the 12-km trek from the base camp in Katra to reach the holy cave and pay obeisance to the benevolent deity that resides there.

As a mark of the devotee's fervour, a silver coin bearing the mark of the goddess is given. The coin is one of the most memorable and well-known parts of the pilgrimage, known even to those who have not had the opportunity to be graced by the Mata's presence.
