I am extremely delighted to present to the world of scholars this first part of the long awaited Critical Edition of the Markandeyapurana, the third most important project of the Institute, after the publications of the Critical Editions of the Valimiki Ramayana (in seven volumes and the Visnupurana (in two volumes). When the work of the Visnupurana was near to completion, but the DTP composing and the printing was in progress, the next project of the preparation and the publication of the Markandeyapurana was approved by the Advisory board in 1988. The work of the Collection of Manuscripts, writing Vulgate and Collation work of this project was started. The work of composing and printing of the Visnupurana was also simultaneously going on. After the publication of the two volumes of the Visnupurana in 1997 and 1998, the DTP work of the Markandeyapurana was begun, but due to the technicalities of the work and deletion of the work done in the computer, it was required to be re-set and composed. Anyhow, the work is now seeing the light of the day, though after long waiting. The reaming work is almost ready and will be printed in near future. The Critical Editions of the Puranas is a continuous process and the work of the Vayupurana and the Vahnipurana are continuing along with this work. We are grateful to the Government of Gujarat and the MS. University for sanctioning the required grant for these continuous projects of Critical Editions We are also thankful to Shri S.M Patni, the Deputy Manager, M. S. University Press and his co-operating staff for neatly binding and printing. We are also thankful to Mrs. Visiontech Computers for DT.P. Composing of the technical work. This work would not have seen the light of the day in the absence of the timely, continuous and whole hearted efforts of Shri Manoj Ajitchandra Upadhyaya, Critical Apparatus Writer in the Institute, whose Technical knowhow has fruitful in completing the project.
The Constituted Text of the Markandeyapurana is based upon the following twenty four Manuscripts, selected from out of a total of forty nine Manuscripts collated for the purposes.
It gives me great pleasure to present before the world of Scholars the Third Volume of the critical edition of the Markandeyapuranam The First and the Second Volume of the Critical edition of the Markandeyapuranam were published in 2011, incorporating adhyayas 75 and adhyayas 76 88 Devimahatmya portion respectively Now this is the third and the final volume containing adhyayas 89 131 and the Concordance. The Pada Index of all the verses in all the three volumes of the Critical Edition of the Markandeyapurana is also appended to this volume. An article on the Uttaramarkandeyapurana and the text of it are also added. Since the text of more than twenty five adhyavas of the Uttaramarkandeyapurana is very corrupt it is printed as it is available in Manuscript with slight corrections The Manuscripts utilized, principles of Text Reconstruction and other details for the Markandeyapurana remain the same and hence are not repeated here It is hoped that this volume will also be welcomed and appreciated by the scholarly world, interested in Puranic studies. The present work was prepared by Late Prof M. L. Wadekar the then Offg. Director and General Editor, and his assistants of the Critical Edition Wing, Oriental Institute. The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. With Great reverence and respectful memories of his scholarly devotion and dedication in preparing the critical edition of this volume, we dedicate this work to him only. We are thankful to Dr. Meena Pathak, retired Assistant Editor, Ms. Ami Bhatt, Dr. Hansa Bhatt, Ms. Saswati Sen, Mr. Manoj Upadhyaya, Ms. Neena Bhatt and Ms Neha Sahastrabhojani for their assistance in collation of various manuscripts, preparing the critical apparatus and other related materials for the critical edition of this work. We are also thankful to the University Authorities for releasing the necessary grant for the printing and publication of this volume We are grateful to Shri Jatin Somani, the Press Manager, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda Press and their co operative staff for printing this work nicely in a very short period.
