MANMOHAN GHOSE (1869-1924) belonged to a .family intimately connected with the nineteenth century Bengal Renaissance. His maternal great grandfather was a friend and associate of Raja Rammohun Roy and his grandfather Rajnarayan Bose, a pupil of Derozio had received the appelation of the grandfather of Indian Nationalism. Manmohan's two younger brothers Aurobindo and Barindra need no special introduction to Indian public.
Manmohan was educated in England and his first book of verse published from Oxford in 1890 received special praise in the Pall Mall Gazette. Oscar Wilde commented, 'Mr. Ghose ought some day to make a name in our literature: But today very few of us know and read about this great poet.
It is really a proud privilege for Sahitya Akademi to bring out a monograph on the life of Manmohan Ghose. Srimati Lotika Ghose, daughter of the poet has taken great pains to depict the life-story of her father, which enables us to understand the poet through his life—his career, his personality, his suffer-ings, his nobility of character and his love of art and letters.
