The small town of Maner is important both as a spiritual centre and as the site of the finest Mughal mausoleum in eastern India. Sufism, which emphasises on mystical and spiritual experiences as the way for reaching the ultimate truth, made an early entry in India; and Maner was one of its early centres. From the last quarter of the 12th century to the present, the saints of Maner have nurtured the values of harmony and peaceful co-existence in society. As a monument to one of its greatest Sufis, we have the Chhoti Dargah or the mausoleum of Shah Daulat which is the finest example of the synergetic features of Mughal architecture that developed under Akbar and found best expression in the buildings of Fatehpur Sikri. Maner thus symbolises the values of spirituality, harmony and synergy. It may rightly be considered among the major sites that represent the spiritual and synergetic heritage of Bihar, both in its tangible and intangible facets.
