Dimbeswar Neog (1899-1966) is one of the most respected figures in the field of literary criticism of modern Assamese literature. Coming first into limelight as a poet, later as a historian of Assamese Language and Literature, Dimbeswar Neog soon demonstrated his vast erudition penetrating insight in respect of all aspects of Neo Vaishnavism in Assam, authoritatively. He was also a pioneer in the field of literary criticism of Assam's folk literature. His most exhaustive English work New Lights on the History of Asamiya Literature, delving deep into all stages of the development of Assamese literature from the ancient to the modern period, has become a classic standing in the test of time.
Hari Prasad Chaliha, a retired civil servant and recipient of the prestigious Government literary pension, is a prolific writer and has several important books to his credit including a definitive biography of Dimbeswar Neog in Assamese. He has also written many other articles both in Assamese and English highlighting the life and works of the outstanding personalities of Assam's social and political history.
