Tongbram Geetchandra Singh (1913-1996), popularly known as G.C. Tongbra, was born in Imphal. A playwright, teacher, lyricist, journalist, translator, filmmaker, actor and director, all moulded into one, he is known for his socio-realistic plays such as Mani Mamou, Matric Pass and Tapta and many others. He tried to explore social problems in his plays in a characteristically humorous and satiric style. A recipient of Padma Shri, Sahitya Akademi Award and many other prestigious awards, he is regarded as one of the makers of modern Manipuri drama. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, honoured his memories by staging a Tongbra Drama Festival under the aegis of Ougri Theatre Repertory of Manipur in 2015 which consisted of four selected plays of the dramatist.
L. Birendrakumar Sharma, recipient of Sahitya Akademi Translation Award, was born in 1948 at Yumnam Leikai. A well-known writer, poet, dramatist and translator, Birendrakumar Sharma was a judge, by profession. He has served in honourable positions as the President of the Panthoibi Natya Mandir, Imphal and General Council Member of Sahitya Akademi.
