While preparing this book the present writer always tried to keep in mind that the objective of this series as described in the outline of the general plan is as follows: "The merit of an author's worth and the quality of his genius should be established on the evidence of his actual contribution assessed in the context of the age in which he lived and, if possible, in the larger context of Indian heritage as a whole.' I do not know whether I have been successful in performing my job, but to me the aim was always clear.
Needless to say, I had to depend on various books, memoirs, letters, interviews and other documents. But the problem for me is that there is no biography of Bishunu Dey and this short outline is going to be the first of its kind. I am fortunate that when Bishnu Dey was physically and mentally active, he used to talk with me very often about his own life, and wrote many letters. His wife Pranati Dey also helped me at that time to know about him. I still have with me innumerable letters of Pranati Dey written to me, full of information about the incidents of his life. Even she, at my request, once sent a big piece of writing fully documented (Bishnu Dey himself had read it and corrected it at places in his own hand-writing). Pranati Dey wrote in the accompanying letter (dated 10 July 1977) that the document was not for printing but for my use in my own writing. That long document and those letters are important basis of this monograph. Besides, I took help from many other sources which have been mentioned in proper places.
