Book Description
Foreword

Fifty years ago, in 1958, Publication Board Assam was established by the Government of Assam, in order to give a fillup to the book movement in Assam. It was aimed to produce, publish and distribute rare invaluable books and to undertake such other projects that might achieve the aims and objectives for which the institution was created. That effort has still been continuing. This year we have been celebrating the Board's golden jubilee with elaborate programs. In 2008, around 60-70 new books will be published besides the reprint of another 45. With these publications the Board, during last 50 years, has contributed with more than thousand publications.

This book narrated the experiences of the visit of Assam by Gandhiji for four times. Gandhiji travelled Assam widely and addressed many public meetings, where he appealed to the people of Assam to fight against untouchability. In 1921 itself, Gandhiji dwelt on the problem of outsiders and he appealed to the people of Assam to forsake the habit of opium eating which makes the people of Assam lazy. In course of his visit, he praised the Assamese women who could weave fairy tales in loom. He also acknowledged the rich tradition of Assamese literature and culture.

This book is expected to bring to the gaze of the people of India the active role played by the Assamese in the freedom struggle of India.

We sincerely hope that this book will be well received by the students, scholars and academicians as well as general readers.
