Beyond doubt , Maharaja Ranjit Singh represents the Punjabi ethos in its fullness. He unified the plains of the Punjab so as to give it a new identity. He successfully asserted the Sikh might by conquering Kashmir, Peshwar, Multan and pushing the borders of his state upto the Khybar pass which had provided passage to the invaders t enable them to ravage the fertile Punjab plains for centuries. This feat earned him the title of Sher-I-Punjab and made him one of greatest personages in whom the Punjabis genuinely take pride.
For us who happen to live in the land which has had the feel of Ranjit Singh it was a happy moment to greet the new millennium and the 21st century by keeping a date with the great Maharaja. The Bicentenary of his coronation generated fresh enthusiasm and provided inspiration to the ambitious youth to strive for ushering in a new era of glory and prosperity for the Punjab.
Guru Nanak Dev University has decided to par-take in these celebrations by bringing into focus the achievements and some peculiar features of he benevolent regime of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the form of special set of publications. The present work by an eminent French scholar Dr. Jean- Marie Lafont, whose association with the university has been quite long, lends new dimension to the study of contribution of the French officers employed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
We are thankful to Professor Prithipal Singh Kapur a well -known scholar in the field of Sikh studies who agreed to edit the book. I am sure the scholars as well as the students of the history of Punjab will find the book useful for intensive study of the period.
