Alladi Kuppuswami (b. 1920) retired as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh. He has won the deep respect of not just the legal and judicial community but the public as well for his impartiality and erudition. After his retirement, he has devoted himself to public causes like rendering help to poor litigants, students; medical aid to the poor; taking care of the aged; and spreading the principles of Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave. He has also been publishing in the fields of law, religion and culture.
Having retold the stories of the Ramayana and the Bhagavatam, I thought it fit to retell the Mahabharata which to me contains the essence of Hinduism. The antagonism between the Kauravas and the Pandavas is similar to the antagonism between cousins in everyday life. The role of Krishna in making the Pandavas win by committing small mistakes to counter the grave errors of those on the other side is one to be debated. I have ended the retelling of the Mahabharata with hundred quotations from it. I consider these quotations as something to be valued and I therefore give translations of each one of them. I thank Professor B. Narasimhacharyulu profusely for going through those quotations and their translations very meticulously. I also thank Professor P. Sriramachandrudu for clarifying certain doubts. I am greatful to Dr. J.S.R.A. Prasad for going through the final proofs. I thank Mr. Nagarajan for being very patient and typing several drafts. I finally thank the Vavilla Press and particularly Mr. Alladi Swaminathan and Mr. Ram Kumar for readily coming forward to print this book.
