Madhubani is a beautiful folk art form that developed in Bihar. It is said that the first Madhubani painting was commissioned by Raja Janaka for the wedding of Sri Rama and Secta Devi. Thus the themes of these paintings include scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas. Raslecia, Shiva Parvati, Shakti, Kali Puja are also favorite subjects.
The themes also include paintings of nature like Sun, trees, flowers, birds and animals. The painting style involves drawing two dimensional images, that are painted with natural colors and decorated with intricate designs. Traditionally paintings decorated the mud walls of the houses. Though now, canvas and paper are preferred mediums.
