Lust (an untold story) is the work of Jeevan Shukla, a Hindi poetry writer of impeccable credentials. The story transports us to the period when India after breaking from the moorings of British rule was gradually drifting towards development with socialistic leaning. The writer portrays adroitly the struggles, frustrations and hopes of the lower stratum of society which was flirting with poverty and privation. To an extent, the novel falls in the psychological genre which provides cerebral delectation. Sex is inalienable from human life as per Freud and it taps the wellspring of intense human passion. This has been dealt with sensitivity by the writer who delves deep to present dialectics of morality and need of protagonists and provides justification. The writer is a prominent signature in Hindi poetry and so the beauty of language with its metaphorical richness is naturally present. He deserves fulsome praise for weaving seamlessly a story which keeps the reader engaged and curious. For aficionados of literature, the book a translation of Hindi novel published in 1973, is must-read.
