Madhavan Nair, popularly known as Mali (1915-1994), was a multi-faceted personality and one of the foremost writers in the Malayalam language. Entire generations have grown up reading his work, including his retellings of the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and the Bhagavata for children. He also authored one of the most widely performed Kathakali plays, Karna Sapatham, or the Oath of Karna. His treatise on the music of Kerala, Kerala Sangeetham, is a scholarly non-fiction work tracing the history of classical music in the state. His writings include over fifty books, numerous articles, reviews, features, and short stories in both Malayalam and English.
