Balraj Komal, a well known literatteur of Urdu, was born at Sialkot (now in Pakistan) on 25 September 1928. Beginning with publication of his poem 'Akeli' in 1948, his literary career is spread over more than five decades. His writings consists of poetry, fiction and literary criticism, all marked by a rare sensitivity, warmth and deep human understanding Balraj Komal belongs to the post-independence generation of poets, immediately noted and loved for their individual poetic stance and experience of life. Translations of his poems and short stories have appeared in several Indian and foreign languages. He is a renowned translator and has translated extensively from and into English, Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi. He has done some original writing in English and Hindi. He has 23 publications to his credit. He has won several prestigious awards over the years including awards from Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy; Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, Bhartiya Bhasha Parishad, Kolkata; Bhasha Vibhag, Punjab Government Shiromani Award and Ghalib Award. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985 for poetry collection Parindon Bhara Asmaan.
