Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a spiritual leader and humanitarian was born in 1956 in southern India. He was often found deep in meditation as a child. At the age of four, he astonished his teachers by reciting the Bhagavad Gita. Gurudev founded The Art of Living, an educational and humanitarian organisation, through which his teachings and service initiatives have touched the lives of 370 million people worldwide. Today with a presence in over 156 countries, The Art of Living is one of the largest volunteer-based organisations in the world.
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is a humanitarian leader, a spiritual teacher, and an ambassador of peace. Born in 1956 in Southern India, Gurudev was a gifted child. By the age of four, he was able to recite the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient Sanskrit scripture, and was often found in meditation. He holds degrees in, both Vedic Literature and Physics.
As a spiritual teacher, Gurudev has rekindled the traditions of Yoga and meditation and offered them in a format that is relevant to the 21st century. From the European Parliament, Gurudev has addressed several global forums on Yoga. He emphasizes that Yoga is not just a set of physical exercises, but a holistic development of human life. Today, Yoga is synonymous with relaxation, happiness, compassion, heightened creativity, spiritual elevation and empowerment-qualities that enhance human life.
Besides reviving ancient wisdom,Gurudev has created new techniques for personal and social transformation. In 1982, Gurudev entered a ten-day period of silence in Shimoga, Karantaka. The Sudarshan Kriya, a powerful breathing technique, was born.With time, the Sudarshan Kriya became the core of The Art of Living courses. The technique has helped millions of people find relief from stress and discover inner reservoirs of energy and peace in daily life.Gurudev founded The Art of Living as an international, non-profit, educational and humanitarian organization engaged in stress-management and services initiatives. The organization operates globally in 156 countries and has touched the lives of over 370 million people. In 1997, he also founded the International Association for Human Values (IAHV) to coordinate sustainable development projects,nurture human values and coordinate conflict resolution in association with The Art of Living.
Through his initaives, Gurudev has consistently emphasized the need for reinforcing human values and recognizing humanity as our highest identity.Numerous honours have been bestowed upon Gurudev, including the highest civilian awards of Colombia, Mongolia and Paraguay. He is the recipient of the padma Vibhushan, India’s highest civilian award, and has also been conferred with 16 honorary doctorates from around the world.
