About the Author

Dr. S.D. Joshi (born on Jan. 31, 1922 at Ramdurg now in Bijapur district, Karnataka) after B.Sc. (Hons), Diploma in Foundry Technology Science (England), was awarded D.Sc. by the Bombay University for his History of Metal Founding in India (400 B.C. to A.D. 1972).

Starting his career as Foundry Manager he held several high positions-Director, Nahan Foundry, M.D., National Instruments Factory; G.M., Foundry Forge Plant, Heavy Engineering Corporation, Ranchi and retired as Chief Executive, Walchand Industries, Ltd., in 1982. He, thereafter, conducted business as Engineering project consultant and held Directorships and advisory assignments in a few Engineering Companies till the middle of 1986 when he suffered a paralytic stroke that compelled him to discontinue active field-work. But he continues to write books, and articles on "Positive Living".

In connection with his official assignments he has travelled extensively the world over-both non-Communist and Communist. The Czechoslovakian Government honoured him-a Gold Medal and Ribbon for promoting international understanding. Founder of the ""Forum for Positive Living", he has conducted seminars on the subject including lectures thereon in India and abroad.

He has authored nearly a dozen books, including Management: An Exercise in Positive Living and World Peace Through National Plans (Somaiyas), Project Evaluation; The Call of Shivathar Ghat; The Present Management Ethos.

His earlier book The Glimpses of Light through Mist and Clouds was published by the Bhavan in 1991.

Preface

After the completion of writing of my book, Glimpses of Light Through Mist and Clouds in 1989, the new titles which came to my mind were The Jottings on Management; Myths, Methods and Madnesses and the present one, My Encounters with Sages, Scientists and Pacesetters. Work on these proceeded rather at a snail's pace. The history of printing all the works completed was simply so discouraging that it appeared that the first flush of my enthusiasm had ebbed too. I should say that I was in no mood to take this business of writing seriously. Thus with great efforts and rather strong determination I finished the book, Jottings on Management, during my short stay of two months at Khadakvasla, Pune. That was then going to be an end of all the writing ventures and it would have remained so had I not had the chance of laying my hands again on the book, Magister Ludi, by Hermann Hesse. The reading of the book stimulated me immensely. What I thought was: it was a better and preferable course to adopt to keep oneself busy with this positively constructive pastime than brooding over the cornered situation because of my dis- ability. Further to avoid any frustration, I should not hanker after the publication of these as such. If opportunity comes, these works would come out in print. Well so far so good. But if not, not to mind at all! But to think that at least the time spent has been put to good use keeping me alive and kicking and fresh as ever. These thoughts reassured me the fruitful- ness of continuing the game and here I am again at the writing desk.

Foreword

I felt greatly elevated and honoured when my colleague and friend Shri. P.S.V. Menon of the Malabar Cements Ltd., asked me to write a few words about the book, My Encounters with Sages, Scientists and Pacesetters by Dr. S.D. Joshi, D.Sc., a man of wide experience.

Dr. Joshi, a retired Chief Executive, is a technologist, and a philosopher. His writings and activities in the past decades have been to correct the imbalances in industrial organisations through his 'Forum for Positive Living'.

He has varied experience and has come in contact with many important people from the very mundane to the very spiritual and the present book is an outcome of these encounters. Though there is a feeling of mysticism in his writings, the message is clear and loud and it forges ahead for the betterment of the human species. This is the mystic in Dr. Joshi's speaking and when he asks one and all to hold on to the absolute anchorage in God, it is the spiritual in him that is speaking. His philosophy can be easily understood and appreciated when we move to a philosophical platform as if to watch the 'vortex of play of life'. It is the lila of the divine and this is the vortex of life.

I feel that the thoughts in this book will reawaken our inner self. Van Dusen uses the French l'ature moi, and bring back spontaneity in our lives that we have lost.

Vedantic will see advaitic concepts in his Introduction; a down to earth person will see the lesson of history opened before him.

When we make statements like all laws are man-made to be observed to keep on the right side of society; all problems are nature-made that are to be understood; all solutions are godmade to be gladly accepted, it may be a little overreaching in its contents apparently but has got to be given deep thought by us for the deep implications.
