Life and Legacy of Gopal Krishna Gokhale is a modest study of the life, achievements and major ideas of a remarkable leader of the Indian Freedom Movement whom even Gandhiji hailed as his political guru and composed to the holy Ganges which invited one to its bosom. The book is divided into four sections dealing with (1) Life and Times; (2) Legacy; (3) Select Speeches and Writings; and (4) Chronology of the great leader.
Gokhale worked during the closing years of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth century when the firm foundations of the political movement were laid in the country. It chiefly on this foundation that Gandhiji erected the whole edifice of his unique programme ultimately culminating in the attainment of freedom.
V.P. Gupta: A Former Professor at Delhi University, Chief Editor, Macmillan India and Deputy Director Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies, V.P. Gupta is presently Secretary, Radha Kamal Mukherjee Memorial Society, while he has been engaged in teaching, research and publishing activity for the last four decades, he has of late been concentrating on a study of Indian Freedom Movements, its ideas, events, personalities and forces which have laid the foundations of contemporary India along with all its triumphs in tragedies. He has already brought out over hundred titles including a number of reference works such as encyclopedia and dictionaries.
Mohini Gupta, has been a Constant Collaborator in the intellectual pursuits of her husband VP Gupta. She is a co-author in a number of his publications including an Encyclopedia of History and Culture of Punjab, and biographical studies of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Lokmanya Tilak, Sardar Patel and Dr. B. Ambedkar. These books brought out in both the languages: English and Hindi, have been widely acclaimed and helped in the spread of awareness about the ideas and ideals of freedom struggle
The present work Life and Legacy of Gopal Krislina Gokhale is a modest study of the Life and times of a remarkable leader of the Indian Freedom Movement whom even Gandhiji hailed as his political guru. The life and achievements of Gokhale should be appreciated in the context of the renaissance in Maharashtra and the state of circumstances operating in the early years of the twentieth century. Gokhale was the outstanding spokesman of the moderate school of Indian politics and some of his ideas were at variance with those of another giant Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak Still, both contributed to the growth of political consciousness in the country. Gokhale had many facets. He was a teacher, thinker, statesman, parliamentarian, reformer and a missionary. His Servants of India Society is a living monument of his dedication to the motherland The present study is divided into four sections: (1) Life and Times; (2) Legacy, (3) Select Speeches and Writings, and (4) Chronology.
Section One deals with the major phases in the career of Gokhale his early life, his role as a teacher and apprenticeship under Ranade, his activities in the Bombay and Imperial Legislative Councils, his leadership of the Congress Party and contribution to the South African struggle launched by Mahatma Gandhi.
Section Two attempts a critical assessment of Gokhale's role in freedom movement and contains an anthology of his ideas and ideals.
