About the Editor

Dr. Vir Singh is an Honorary Director of Maharaja Surajmal Centre for Research and Publication, run by Surajmal Memorial Education Society, New Delhi.

His research work 'Kamayani Ki Katha: Gaveshnatmak Anusheelan' was published in 1976. While explaining different aspects of ancient legend in world literature of deluge and development of mankind thereafter, he learnt interdisciplinary approach which he utilised while establishing the aforesaid research centre.

Dr. Vir Singh used his intensive study of the primary sources on the Jats to update three prominent works on the Jat History.

Foreword

Inspired by the ideals of Maharaja Surajmal, the 18th century ruler of the State of Bharatpur, Surajmal Memorial Education Society was established in the year 1972 with the aim and objective to provide educational facilities to the weaker sections of the society, especially those belonging to the rural areas. To fulfill its objectives, the Society established three Professional Institutes in its campus at C-4, Janakpuri, New Delhi and also two Public Schools one each in U.P. and Rajasthan. It is in the process of establishing a new campus in Haryana also. The Society also established Maharaja Surajmal Centre for Research & Publication which has been undertaking the collection, preservation and publication of the material on rural heritage, especially relating to the life and role of peasantry in our national movements. So far, the Centre has published 19 books which include research work of scholars, translation of the prominent works in Hindi language, reprinting of the famous works of peasants of the North and North-West India and proceedings of the National Seminars organized by the Society from time-to-time.

Maharaja Surajmal Centre for Research and Publication of Surajmal Memorial Education Society on the occasion of the birth centenary year of Shaheed Bhagat Singh organised a National Seminar The Life and Ideas of Shaheed Bhagat Singh A Lesson for Today at the premises of the Society at C-4 Janakpuri, New Delhi on 28 September 2007 The objective of this Seminar was to highlight the ideas and activities of the great martyr, Bhagat Singh who has continued to ignite the minds of our youths for generations as also to bring out the lesson that we can learn in today's world. It is the responsibility of scholars to take the glorious legacy of Bhagat Singh in a big way before the Indian people as a source of inspiration to rally them in their maximum numbers for combating the challenges of today. He stands out as a modern National leader and thinker. Emphasizing the separation of religion from politics.

In this publication we are reminded of Bhagat Singh and his passionate involvement with the lives of workers and peasants. 21 Research papers presented in the National Seminar have found place here along with Inaugural and Keynote Addresses by the renowned historians. In this volume we have given English articles first and then Hindi articles follow. It has been done to facilitate the typing work.
