I have read with great interest the manuscript of a book named "Learn Bengali (Yourself)" written by Sri Bidhu Bhusan Das Gupta. The book aims at indicating the method to be followed by a foreigner who wants to learn Bengali in the quickest and most effective manner. It is at once a book on grammar, pronunciation, the right use of idioms and colloquial turns of speech and a compilation of suitable extracts from Bengali prose and poetry which will test the learner's progress in mastering the language and present before him the choicest literary specimens which will give him joy and cultivate his powers of appreciation.
In fact this small volume is so carefully planned and its various lessons are graded with such consummate skill and knowledge of the requirements of the first learner that it is like a veritable open-sesame key which will unfold the treasure-house of the Bengali language to students of other language groups and a prop to guide their footsteps along the steep and difficult path that leads from first acquaintance to mature understanding.
The want of such a book must have been keenly felt by our brothers and sisters in other parts of India who are keenly desirous of learning Bengali with the minimum effort in order to taste at first hand the inspiring patriotism of Bankim Chandra, the rich melody of Rabindranath's poetry and the subtle analysis of human nature in the writings of Sarat Chandra, not to speak of the more intimate appeal of the younger generation of Bengali writers. For those who aspire after a more complete mastery the book provides a carefully selected bibliography which may be perused with advantage by more advanced scholars.
