The Indian Institute of Advanced Study was one of the first institutions in the country to organize a national seminar on this topic in 1967 "to have a closer look at the problem with some amount of objectivity". It made a pioneering contribution in surveying the South Asian sociolinguistic scene, suggesting a meaningful direction to policy-makers concerning this sensitive issue (Poddar, ed. 1969). In May 1973, the Institute again took the initiative in conducting a seminar of experts on the theme "Social stratification and language behaviour", in order to examine the role of language in social and individual life. It provided an interdisciplinary focus for various studies of sociolinguistic interest, particularly in the context of cultural pluralism.
Forty linguists, social scientists, philosophers, and scholars of other behavioural sciences participated in the eight-day deliberations. Attention was devoted to sharpening conceptual understanding of the issues of language and communication in the developing world, particularly in relation to the processes of modernization.
