INTRODUCTION Kuvempu's name is inextricably interwoven with the modern Kannada Renaissance. He has made experiments with, and has attained perfection in, every genre of literature-the lyric and the drama, the novel and the short story, the essay and literary criticism. Above all, it is Kuvempu who gave to Kannada its only modern epic, and a unique one too. His songs inspired in our people staunch patriotism and passionate love for their mother-tongue. In him the oppressed and downtrodden found a new hope and a new way of life. He became their voice their pathetic but poetic voice.

This doyen of modern Kannada literature, who has held sway over the literary scene for over is decades, continues (fortunately for us) to dominate the literary domain and radiate peace and joy As the ripe age of eighty-two, he draws hordes of literary pilgrims to his hermitage, aptly named Udayaravi.
