Kuvalayananda of Sri Appayya Diksita is a popular text of Alankarasastra. It gives the definition and the illustration of arthalankaras. In this respect it follows Candraloka of Jayadeva. In Candraloka the first line of each verse the definition of alankara and the second line gives an illustration for the same.
Appayya Diksita broadly follows this plan.
However, he explains the points made by the illustration with his remarks in his commentary. He also quotes one or two other illustrations of respective alankaras which are further explained by Alankara Chandrika of Vaidyanatha Suri. This gives a clear understanding of each alankara and the beauty brought about in the verse concerned.
Kuvalayananda is prescribed as a text book for the Sahitya class of the Sanskrit Pathasalas and colleges. Hence we are publishing this text to make it available to the large number of students at Sanskrit Pathashalas and colleges.
