Other than godheads, there were many other gods who formed part of Indian mythology. Rudra protected cattle but could also be fierce and destructive. Bhairav followed Shiv and frequented cremation grounds. Madan was a delicate creature who had flowers as his arrows, and shot at people's hearts only to rouse love in them. The Maruts were violent, warlike storm-gods. Pavan or Vayu was the force of wind. Vasus were lesser gods, protecting the natural wealth of the earth. Kuber was the treasurer of the wealth of gods, with yakshas as his employees. As their architect, engineer and manufac- turer of weapons, the gods had Vishwakarma. As their doctor, they had the two Ashvini Kumars. The gods were thus assorted creatures, with various functions and purposes.
