Preface

In today's Knowledge Society, knew about the people in the organization Lis considered as the biggest asset and also equally the biggest challenge in tapping the tacit knowledge and experiences of the people, and also making such tacit knowledge shareable to create new knowledge or to leverage the existing knowledge of the organization, ultimately to achieve the goals of the organization.

Knowledge Management (KM) is a strategic management tool to survive and thrive in the ever-changing global markets. It is recognized as a viable solution in creating, storing and distribution of knowledge and information in organizations /institutions. All kinds of organizations both for-profit and not-for-profit across the world are either showing an inclination to implement KM or implementing KM in their organizations. In this context, the present work is relevant to the current times.

Among the pre-requisites of the implementation of Knowledge Management in Organizations, KM Tools and Techniques play a crucial role in knowledge tapping, creation, storing and distribution within the organizations. Multiple tools and techniques are available in the present age of Information Technology for the implementation of KM. However, it is crucial that the KM implementers have to identify one or a few tools that will help in knowledge discovery, organization and sharing, that is appropriate to the objectives and activities of the organization i.e., the subject domains of the organization.

The book is intended to create awareness and understanding of the importance and implementation of Knowledge Management (KM) in higher education institutions and academic libraries. It inspires and motivates the library and information professionals, management professionals, and all others who are committed to the sustenance and development of institutions in the competitive global environment.

Library and Information professionals with their wealth of knowledge and training in information management, design & development of institutional repositories, and digital libraries can undertake the knowledge management activities in institutions and libraries, with a clear understanding that KM will help in better the performance of institutions and libraries, by preserving and sharing of information and knowledge, efficiently and effectively.
