Nirendranath Chakravarti (b. 1924) is one of the few modern Bengali poets who have left an everlasting aesthetic influence on the readers. With all his poet's being he has depicted the cruel inhuman society and has become the bard of the modern times. The pain and suffering, agony and frustration of the present time have found their finest expression in his lyrics. The present translation of his Sahitya Akademi Award-winning Bengali book Ulanga Raja shows a rare delicacy and breadth of vision of the poet. Another important feature of Nirendranath's world of creativity is his beautiful synthesis of tradition and modernity. Thus while the roots of his creativity have entered deep into the soil of tradition, each tiny leaf, as fresh as morning dew, stands out in the ever-changing air of the immediate present. His principal works include Nil Nirjan (The Blue Loneliness, 1954), Kolkatar Jishu (Jesus of Calcutta, 1969) etc.
