It will be a surprise to many of my friends and students when they see this small collection of my short Sanskrit poems. I am known to have been dabbling in Vedanta, Mimamsa and Manuscriptology all these years. No doubt my students are familiar with my lecturers on literary works in class-rooms and outside, and also my books in Kannada giving critical appreciation of Sanskrit literary works. They are also familiar with my Sanskrit Radio plays. But I had deliberately kept my Sanskrit poems away from their view. This is because these were sporadic and had to be given a unity and finish. I have been writing short peoms, short plays, essays etc., right from my student days and have won a couple of prizes also for these. But it was all an young man's pleasure. The editor of Madhuravani, Sri Galagali Ramacharya, also used to induce me to write. Now, I wish to put my creative writings together and place them in the hands of the readers. This publication is a result of such a desire.
The twenty-three items included in this collection, though written at different times, have an underlying unity. This unity is in respect of the central thought running through all the poems. Basic goodness of man, his deviating from it under various preasures, an appeal to resist such deviation, and appeal for the fellowship are to be found in these poems. This is the ethicle aspect of the poems. The aesthetic touch varies from poem to poem. In one or two poems like that on 'Beauty' it is prominent. An element of humour has crept in many verses to make the point more effective and to provide contrast or relief. There is a balancing of reflective and imaginative elements.
The above self-evaluation is not intended to be a defence for publishing a collection of poems at this advanced age. It is only to indicate the nature of the urge in scarping these poems. I welcome comments from the readers. I thank the friends who have sent their comments.
