The Central Institute of Indian Languages was established on July 17, 1969 with an aim to help evolve and implement language policy of the Govt. of India and co-ordinate the work of various institutions in India and abroad with regard to the development of Indian languages. In order to achieve the objectives the Institute conducts various projects and programmes. The research work conducted by the institute is of diverse nature, which includes linguistic studies of different Indian languages, the preparation of basic language teaching and learning materials.
The Institute has prepared several bibliographies on different subjects for the use of researchers. The present work entitled Kashmiri Language Linguistics and Culture: An Annotated Bibliography presents a survey of prominent works related to the subject under different sections. All the prominent works have been listed with annotations. In the beginning of each chapter a brief survey of the section is presented which is followed by listing of the prominent works on the subjects with annotations wherever required.
The book is primarily aimed for the use of researchers and students of Kashmiri language linguistics, literature and culture. It is hoped that researchers, teachers, students and general readers will find this book useful.
There is an increasing interest in linguistic research work on Kashmiri and in the teaching and learning of Kashmiri as a second or foreign language in India and abroad. Bibliographical references are essential for any kind of serious research. The present work provides annotated bibliographical references of the available source materials in different areas of Kashmiri language, linguistics, culture, and literature.
The references included in this bibliography have been collected from both direct and secondary sources. I would like to thank different scholars of Kashmiri language, linguistics and literature who have responded to my request and sent me information regarding their work.
I would like to thank Dr. Ruth Laila Schmidt who has co-compiled with me Kohistani to Kashmiri: An Annotated Bibliography of Dardic Languages earlier (ILS, Patiala 1983). In that work, Dr. Schmidt had prepared annotations regarding Shina, Kohisty6é and other minor languages of the Dardic group. I was primarily responsible for preparing the entries related to the Kashmiri language. The bibliography under reference is out of print, and requires revision before it is reprinted. Both of us are working on it, and hope to bring it out soon. I have used some of the earlier annotations related to the Kashmiri language in the present book. Of course, a large number of entries have been added to those and annotated.
I have tried to include most of the relevant references which have come to my notice and were available for study. I hope that the teachers, students and researchers of Kashmiri language, linguistics, culture and literature will find the present bibliography useful. Suggestions for its improvement and also information regarding other important references for inclusion in its next edition will be welcomed.
