The Central Institute of India Languages has initiated a series of State School Readers for three different levels of language teaching in the major Indian Languages in the Schools. This exercise is a part of its programme of training school teachers in a language other than their mother-tongue under the scheme of implementation of three language formula.
Second Language teaching is not quite new in our country. But the age-old System of language teaching is unscientific in method of teaching and in designing and production of instructional materials.
Currently efforts are made to make the programme of second language teaching more ideal, scientific and functional by CIIL, Mysore and its seven Regional Language Centres at Mysore, Pune, Lucknow, Patiala, Solan, Bhubaneswer and Gawahati. The teachers are trained in the Regional Language Centres of the Institute utilizing the latest technologies in regard to language teaching. In order to update the content and methodology of their teaching materials it has become very essential to produce this Series as a part of the whole programme.
This book, however, is specifically designed for those School children who are learning Kashmiri as a Second/Third Language and who have already read State School Reader (Level I) of the language. In this book the different structures of the language have been introduced through conversational lessons. While designing the lessons proper care has been taken with regard to grading of structures, vocabulary, cultural items; and drills and exercises.
The Institute will be happy if this series of the books, i.e. Kashir Kitab I and II contribute to the improvement and development of teaching of Indian Languages as Second/Third Language within the language teaching programme of our country.
