Desire is Cause Death and Rebirth Death and life are not fundamentally isolated experiences. When memory persists, we call it sleep. When memory vanishes, we call it death; or, from another point of view, we call it death which is an experience of a new form of bodily individuality, all this being brought about by the desires of the mind of the individual, the desires being endless. We die because of desires, and we are reborn on account of desires. Desires are propulsions of our individual nature towards certain types of experience. These propulsions, which we call desires, demand contact with certain groups of physical objects. All this dramatic effort on the part of the mind to come in contact with certain sets of physical objects goes by the name of life; and the type of the physical body into which one is born, and the kind of relationship of society with which one is connected in this life—all these are determind by the particular set or group of desires with which one is born, this set being called the Prarabdha- Karma. That which we usually call the Prarabdha is nothing but the power or the force of those kinds of desires which have not been fulfilled in our previous lives, but which have to be fulfilled in this present empirical life of the bodily individuality. When these desires are exhausted by experience through this particular given bodily individuality, the body is shed.
Last year our Annual issue was Morality Number. The question arises as to how we can attach value t0 principles of Morality. How morality should be in our living. With this idea in mind, we thought unless and until we have full faith in rebirth and hereafter world it is not possible to give practical shape to morality. If we want that we should have spiritual development and peace, happiness should prevail in the world and we avoid committing sins, heinous crimes, it is essential that we must realize that this life is not the end all. It is a mere passing stage. We are not mortals. We are not mere physical bodies rather we are immortal souls. Whatever we do here in this world we have to reap the consequences of those acts in this world or hereafter world.
"Pleasant, unpleasant and mixed of three kinds is the fruit of action, accruing even after death (if it not reaped in this life) to those who have not relinquished the fruit, but there is no, here or hereafter for those who have relinquished the fruit."
Now in the world sins are on increase. Untruth, guileness, theft, violence, adultery and bad conduct are increasing day by day. The brave are persecuting the weak. New types of sins have come in forefront such as female foeticide; divorce has taken a very wide form. Deserting husband and wives on flimsy grounds has become much rampart in every society. For bodily comforts we do not hesitate to cause harm to others. Sensuality, luxurious life have become common. Drugs, Narcotics are used in daily life. Hypocrisy, adulteration in food items, supply of spurious drugs have become frequent. Dishonesty and mistrust upon others, disrespect to parents are on wax. Intolerance has grown—up so much that on a petty matter students, children and men commit suicide without giving any thought to its consequences. People generally seem to believe that the present life is the only life; no one recognises that there is life hereafter. Therefore all of us are making all efforts to make this life comfortable and easy. The aim of life has generally become "While live, live happily take ghee even incurring debt. This body is the last there is no return.” Enjoy life who sees what will happen afterwards.
Generally people are moving under this notion which will lead to destruction of all. That is why people are becoming victims of sufferings. This is the inevitable result of not accepting the philosophy of rebirth and hereafter world.
With above consideration Kaly5uya—Kalpataru has decided to bring out the new issue for the year as Lyle after Death Number. In this issue we have included such incidents where children newly born have retained memories of their past lives in India and foreign countries also and on verification the facts have proved true. Sri Yoganandaji a renowned spiritual master says that he recalls many of his past incarnations. It is not mere belief one can test such memories of the past and he has verified his recollections. Experiences of those past lives came clearly to his mind. Some facts have been mentioned in this issue. Founder of Gita Press, Sri Jayadayalaji Goyandaka also had given his recollections of his and his friend’s past lives. We cannot discount such experiences of God—realized souls by telling them mere fictions or imaginations. Why such exalted souls should tell lies to us! Sri Goyandakaji had told that his friend Hanumana Bux Goyandaka——a king in his past life had to take birth in different species birds and beasts due to his indulgence in sense enjoyments in past life.
All these facts go t0 impress upon us that this life is not the end of life. If we commit evil acts we are bound to suffer had consequences. We may be forced to go to hells and suffer horrible tortures. If we perform good deeds we may go upwards to heavenly regions. But thence after exhaustion of merits we have to return to this world. If we are wise enough we should attain salvation in this very life so that we may not have to take rebirths or suffer agonies in other worlds.
The thought of a human being at the time of death determines his rebirth. This is a rule that whatever object or being a man thinks of, while breathing his last that alone does he attain. So Lord Krsna in Gita advises humanity through its representative Arjuna that if anyone wants to avoid rebirth he should remember Him at all times and do his dutiful action from time to time. This is easiest way to escape from the grip of rebirth. To convince our readers we are giving various articles of highly exalted souls and various true facts regarding rebirths. Hindu scriptures fully support this theory of immortality of the soul and rebirth of Jiva. In Kathopanisad the dialogue between Yamaraja and Naciketa is very significant and a clear proof of immortality of soul.
