About the Book The Journal of Indian Intellectual Traditions is a biannual Journal of the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit, University of Pune, Pune-411007 (India).

It accepts and publishes original research articles related to any aspect of any knowledge domain of Indian Intellectual Culture. It encourages interdisciplinary approach for civilizational dialogue.

It also accepts book-reviews and notes.

Preface The laryngeal theory plays a central part of comparative Indo-European linguistics nowadays. Everybody who deals with historical grammer of Sanskrit has to take a decision on the 'lost phonemes'. This book is the result of lectures which I delivered at the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit of the Poona University within the academic year 1985/86 on the base of an agreement between the Poona University and my University, the Humboldt University of Berlin (G.D.R.), about cooperation in the field of Sanskrit and allied studies. The book is made for the usage at Universities. Therefore the material is always given in a clear order with some planed redundance. Many cross references and summaries included into the running text are to make the book easy to be used even by students and more than once additional remarks seemed to be necessary for introducing such grammatical features like 'Attic reduplication' in Greek or 'Verschaerfung' in Germanic less known to my Indian audience.
