The combined volume of two annual issues of the JOURNAL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SANSKRIT is going to be published shortly. One of the oldest departments of this University, the Department of Sanskrit has always contributed significantly to the development of academic activities of the University. Observing Sanskrit Day, Sanskrit year, holding seminars and endowment lectures in addition to regular teaching and research provide opportunities to utilize the great treasures of Sanskrit language for effective intellectual interaction in different directions aimed at enriching human qualities. In spite of the unbelievable development in Science and Technology and the rapid progress in material well-being, we cannot but accept what Dr. S. Radhakrishnan observed in his address at the Philosophical congress at Harvard University, 'we are not above the levels of our past generations in ethical and spiritual life, ... we have declined from their standards ... are becoming mechanised; void within'. All serious efforts for addressing the problem of developing inner personality that makes up the gap are welcome.
The present volume is enriched with contributions that make use of our ancient thoughts, on aesthetics and culture, basic principles of education that have eternal relevance, the traditional ideas preaching universal brotherhood so vital for sustenance of pluralist society we love living in. I am sure that the assorted papers in this volume will be able to meet the expectations of the readers and encourage more publications. My sincere thanks to the Editor, my colleagues in the Department and all the contributors.
