Book Description
Preface

Pandit Lakshmi Kanta Jha was Advocate-General, Bihar (1948-50) and Chief Justice, Patna High Court (1950-52). He was President of Bihar Research Society (1950-52). He was also closely associated with the initial stages of the establishment of K. S. Darbhanga Sanskrit University.

Even before he occupied the exalted position of the Chief Justice of Patna High Court, his acumen and deep insight into legal problems were widely known-particularly, in regard to matters involving an appreciation of the Mithila School of Hindu Law, in which field his acquaintance with and interpretation of original texts, were especially noteworthy. In 1937, he edited a publication, 'Vivāda Cintamani' of the great Vacaspati, after making a critical and comparative study of old Mithila manuscripts of that treatise, It is understood that even now he is keen on bringing out an analytical edition of Vibhagasara of Vidyapati.

The members of Bihar Research Society adopted a resolution at the Society's annual general meeting held on 7 November 1971, that a felicitation volume should be published in honour of Pt. Lakshmi Kanta Jha; and the present publication has been undertaken in implementation of that resolution. This collection of 19 research papers and 5 contributions by those who were closely associated with Pt. L. K. Jha at different stages in his career, is an index of the esteem in which he is held in the world of scholars of Indology.

The Chief Editor and the other members of the Editorial Board would like to take this opportunity of expressing their gratitude to all the contributors who responded to help in bringing out this volume.
