One can argue with external opinions, but never with intrinsic facts. Which is why, S. Shenbaga Perumal's Jesus-A Spiritual Leader or a Political Messiah: What the Bible says about Him makes you sit up and take notice. This compelling book examines what present-day Christians consider to be the "gospel truth" in light of what's actually narrated in the Old and the New Testaments of the Bible.
Are Jesus, the son of Mary, and Christ, the Savior, one and the same? When and how did the concept of Christ get entrenched, and does it conform to Biblical beliefs of the Old Testament? On what authority did Paul, the author of the prime principles in the New Testament, decide to abandon the Old Testament, which was followed by Jesus himself? What were the epochal Biblical events? Who were the influential personages of the Bible and what was their outlook and way of life? Were lies used to take Jesus to the Gentiles, the non-Jews? How did Jesus-who was baptized, circumcised, and lived as a Jew following the Laws of the Old Testament until he was crucified become the Christ of the Gentiles? Was a political leader serving his particular caste of people elevated to an overarching status, and why? Are the core tenets of The Bible in line with what's now held as the doctrines of Christianity? Did wisdom from the East reach Gentile Christians through Gnosticism? Is the Kingdom of God only for the followers of the Christ? Are faith and truth on true separate trajectories?
Having served as Assistant Headmaster in a Christian School, Nagercoil, of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, 68-year- old Shenbaga Perumal, MA, B.Ed., began writing on issues related to misinformation about various aspects of Hinduism and also of Christianity around six years ago.
In 2017, he wrote a book in Tamil, Kutravaalikoondil Manu (Was Manu a Culprit?). Popular daily newspaper Thyna Thanthi carried out a review of the second edition of the book in 2022, which was received positively.
Jesus: A Spiritual Leader or a Political Messiah is the English version of his 2018 Tamil book Yudargalin Yesuvum Pavulin Christhuvum. The book in Tamil has helped many Christians know the reality of their own religion.
The author has done several sessions on different youtube channels.
his book, titled 'Jesus-A Spiritual Leader Tor a Political Messiah' is not intended to promote or criticise any religious belief.
The word religion refers to a system of an organised collection of beliefs in a God or Gods following certain rituals prescribed for those beliefs. But spirituality (Aathmeekam) is entirely different from religion. It is above all religious beliefs, and it does not discriminate against anybody based on social status, sex, caste or even on physical differences between various living organisms. Most religions in the world do not follow this universal oneness and equality. Each religion claims that its own principles and beliefs are superior and those of the others are false and irrelevant.
Judaism is an ancient religion, it existed before the birth of Jesus and is still practised by Jews all over the world. As per the Bible, the religion of Judaism is only for the people of Israel, the Jews and it is not for the gentiles. A person named Paul, the author of the prime principles in the New Testament, has successfully attempted to elevate Judaism to a different status. He tried to introduce a new word "Christ" around the year 49 A.D. and tried to change the face and outlook of Jesus. The literal meaning of Christ is a divine force which does not differentiate between "human beings". This concept of Christ was totally new to the Jews as well as their Judaism and it was not in accordance with Biblical beliefs in the Old Testament.
In the epistle of Paul, to the Colossians (Colossians 1: 25-27KJV), Paul explained that the concept of Christ was kept as a secret mystery for the Israel-Jews whereas it was already well known to the gentiles (non- Jewish population) living elsewhere.
I am delighted to write a foreword for this Linteresting book authored by Mr. S. Shenbaga Perumal. He is closely known to me for the past four decades. The title of the book 'Jesus-A Spiritual Leader or a Political Messiah' will be interesting to most readers. Mr. Shenbaga Perumal was the convenor of the Inter-Religious Fellowship organisation at Manavalakurichi in Kanyakumari district in which eminent people of Hindu, Christian and Islamic religions were active members.
He organised an inter-religious cooperation seminar at the Bapuji Memorial High School at Manavalakurichi under the guidance of the C.S.I. Christian Bishop Rt. Rev. Selvamani in 1977. I had the opportunity to meet him in that seminar and afterwards, he visited my house several times to discuss his doubts, which arose while reading the Bible. I began to teach him the theology of the Bible. I really appreciated his strong conviction that any religious belief should be acceptable to our wisdom and logic.
We had many lengthy arguments and discussions about the Biblical events, and I was able to clarify and answer his questions with the verses advocated by St. Paul as given in the Bible. But the verses of '2 Corinthians' 11: 4, 5 and 'Romans' 3: 7, 8 quoted by him made me reconsider my ideas and stimulated me to gain a deeper understanding and introspection about the Biblical verses. He aired the opinion that St. Paul was an unreliable and unauthentic person and it appeared to be convincingly justifiable to me also.
