"Sad is his lot, who, once at least in his life, has not been a poet." All of us are poets, whether we express our poems in print or only within our own hearts. Since the beginning of time, man has found solace and freedom in poetry. Verses of poets have moved the mind of man and inspired his imagination to loftier heights. His mind had taken wings and soared, into the fluffy clouds to mingle with the Gods.......to unravel the mysteries of a woman's love and soul.. ..to capture the essence of a greater and nobler life. It has fuelled his passion, strengthened his resolve and soften his feelings. Poetry has given man a singing soul. Most of the poems in this volume were written between the years 1980-1984 when I was serving in Calcutta. It was on one of those mystical nights when pen in hand I began to jot down a few lines. Over a number of years this had led to a small little collection. When I returned back to Shillong towards the end of 1984, these poems together with my other paraphernalia were dumped into an old tin-trunk and were left more or less forgotten. It was a very dear friend, Donbokwell Syiemlich, who persuaded me to dig them up, and but for him, these poems would not have seen the light of day. Much as I dread to claim myself a poet, it would however be vain of me if I were not to express my elation and satisfaction at seeing my poems in print. Should the reader therefore derive some pleasure from reading them as I have had in writing them, then I shall be more than rewarded.
