Book Description
About the Book
The book is a collection of research papers that the author published in various learned journals of history and art during the last ten years. Though the subject-matter of these papers is varied they have one common theme, namely, pre-Mughal and Mughal architecture and culture.

Based on original research work, the collection of papers on mediaeval Indian architecture and culture is of great use to the students of Indian history, while the research scholars of Indian architecture especially will find in this book many new facts for evaluation of pre-Mughal and Mughal architecture.

Nath (b. 1933) was an acknowledged authority whose many books on various aspects of mediaeval Indian architecture have been highly acclaimed by scholars. Many of Dr. Nath's papers are to be found in the prestigious Marg.

Dr. Nath was Reader in the Department of History & Indian Culture, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur.

Preface
This is a collection of 21 Research-papers on Medieval Indian History, Culture, Art and Architecture, published independently in journals over the decade. The first such work entitled: 'SOME ASPECTS OF MUGHAL ARCHITECTURE' (Abhinav, New Delhi, 1976) was exclusively devoted to Mughal Architecture; the present one includes papers on aspects of Medieval History and Culture such as Religion and Society, e.g., 'Indian Facet of Sufism', 'Amir Khusrau's Experiment in Nationalism' and 'On the Authenticity of the Allopanisad'; Polity, e.g., 'On Sovereignty of Raja Mansingh Tomar of Gwalior' and 'Mughal Concept of Sovereignty....'; Epigraphy and Historiography, though this also mainly contains new findings in Art and Architecture. For example, the Tomb of Muhammad Ghori and the Jam'at-Khanah Masjid have been identified, the meaning and purpose of the Ladheri-Gate of Gwalior and the Sher-Mandal have been defined and the 'Chhaparkhat' is interpreted. The Sanskrit text on the mosque construction is an attempt to study the theory of Medieval Indian Architecture. The last three papers are devoted to the Taj Mahal. The One on its builders is a study of the Persian data related to its construction. It throws a flood of light on this practically unknown aspect. As a whole, the book covers the subject from different angles and ventures to define and interpret various obscure or unknown medieval things.
