lqbal's poetry has such great variety that several anthologies of it could be compiled, each quite different from the other. The poem in this volume, while being a personal selection, are representative of lqbal's poetry. The thematic arrangement reflects the diversity of subjects dealt by lqbal.
The volume aims at introducing lqbal's poetry to the English-speaking world. While scholars and students will especially benefit from the detailed commentaries and note, it is hoped that general readers in both Muslim and Western countries will find the work useful and interesting.
In his translation Mustansir Mir seeks to convey every level of meaning and mood in the poems, while making the text as readable and idiomatic as possible. There is a biographical and general introduction, a commentary precedes each of the twelve sections into which the book is divided, and comprehensive notes are provided. The aim as Mustansir Mir says is "total reader comprehension."
Mustansir Mir is Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio. In 1995-6 he was a fellow at the centerfor Islamic Studies, Oxford.
