In the history of human intellectual and spiritual development, few personalities shine as brightly as Swami Vivekananda. His life, teachings and profound insights continue to guide seekers on the path of truth and self- realization. As a prophet and path finder, as a philosopher par excellence from the Indian subcontinent, his teachings transcend mere theoretical considerations and have deep relevance to the practical realities of human life.
Swami Vivekananda's philosophy is essentially characterized by a spirit of self-renunciation and a deep devotion for the betterment of humanity and it is firmly rooted in the ground of practice as well as service. He proclaimed, "Therefore all love is life, it is the only law of life; all selfishness is death, and this is true here or hereafter." Although he led a monastic life, his teachings were not confined to monasticism. Rather, those are meant to be lived and applied by people from all walks of life, enriching their moral fabric, and, therefore leading them to higher truths. Like a saint Swamiji mentioned, "The earth's bravest and best will have to sacrifice themselves for the good of many, for the welfare of all. Buddhas by the hundred are necessary with eternal love and pity."
At the heart of Vivekananda's philosophy lies a deep reverence for the Vedanta, the ancient philosophical tradition that illuminates the ultimate unity of existence.
Swami Vivekananda, the versatile monk and eminent philosopher of the Ramakrishna order, preached his philosophical insights to enlighten the general mass of the society. He repeatedly wanted everyone in society should be morally and spiritually mature so that they could be capable of developing an ideal society where equality and justice can be established properly. For this reason, in this present work, I primarily highlight Swami Vivekananda's observation regarding the ideal society, moral understanding and spiritual development and in this context, Vivekananda's moral and social philosophy and his metaphysical outlooks have simultaneously been evaluated. I hope this effort will motivate all the readers to find a deeper understanding of the philosophy of Swami Vivekananda.
It is an undeniable fact that the postmodern era has established itself as an age dominated by science and technology. However, human civilization is increasingly at stake as we seem to be losing our philosophical and spiritual insights. Throughout history, many great philosophers and spiritual leaders have offered extraordinary teachings that have laid the foundation for significant changes in social systems. They have also tried to profess outstanding techniques to elevate the minds of the general populace beyond merely sensual or material spheres. This is probably the just way for social reformation and progress.
