Scholars and research workers in Indian History and Culture will find lists of inscriptions of the various periods, dynasties and regions of India a useful aid. Such lists of epigraphs as Luder's, Bhandarkar's and Hiralal's having become out of date, a necessity was felt for preparing and publishing uptodate lists of inscriptions of India arranged dynasty and region-wise. Primarily they will be helpful in eliminating the already known records and in fixing the new items in their proper places. With this end in view, I had started the preparation of a series of period -cum-dynasty wise lists of inscriptions immediately after I became the Chief Epigraphist of the Archacological Survey of India, besides making sincero, serious and strenuous efforts to bring the other publications of the Epigraphy Branch, like Epigraphia hadica and the Annual Report on Indian Epigraphy uptodate. In preparing the lists of epigraphs I tried to enlist the co-operation of the members of my office of whom a large number became really enthusiastic as they found the work quite rewarding to them. With their help I was able to prepare within a short period, lists of inscriptions of the Mauryan period, of the Gupta period, of the Satavahana period, of the Pallava period, of the Kadamba and Ganga periods, of the early dynasties that ruled over Orissa, etc., and they are at various stages of finalisation. I hope to get them published as early as possible.
