The present text has been designed for students of computer science as an introduction to information technology. The idea behind the design of the book is to not just present forth the readers an introductory manual, but also enable them to have a basic understanding of the essentials of the subject under practical circumstances. Incorporated into the text are also case studies and examples which would help the readers gain better insight into the subject, along with the incisive written content. It is hoped that the incisive and comprehensive content of the book serves well for all.
Pradeep Mathur, an assistant professor in the department of Computer Science, received his Graduate and PG Diploma in Computers and Information Technology. He joined in the teaching faculty as an lecturer in 1998 and was promoted to associate professor in 2002. He has authored many textbooks on computers and information technology, in both print and electronic formats. He provides short-term courses to budding information professionals.
Information technology is defined as the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. It deals particularly with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and securely retrieve information. When computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is information technology, or "infotech". Information Technology (IT) is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information. Presumably, when speaking of Information Technology (IT) as a whole, it is noted that the use of computers and information are associated. Today, the term information technology has ballooned to encompass many aspects of computing and technology, and the term has become very recognisable. The information technology umbrella can be quite large, covering many fields. IT professionals perform a variety of duties that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the management and administration of entire systems.
