The monograph aims at an evaluation of the historical factors which have determined the evolution of Indian Political life in the medieval period. In it an attempt has been made t understand the underlying currents of thought and action in the sphere of politics and statecraft on which the state-system of the Sultanate was based. Once the Turkish rulers and the local chiefs, both Rajput and non-Rajput, arrived at a tacit understanding to tolerate each other, political co-existence and stability became possible. The administrative system that the Turks and Afghans evolved and developed had an Indian stamp upon it, for they sought to preserve local traditions by incorporating them in their state-system.
During the Sultanate period the institution of kingship played a vital role, providing the motive force for action and a pivot for stability. Its relationship with the nobility of the time has also been examined. The leading ideas and institutions of the period have been viewed in their historical perspective and an attempt has been made to interrelate concepts and objective facts each elucidating the other
